Sunnyside Shines
Promoting a Neighborhood with Charming Visuals
Sunnyside Shines is a nonprofit Business Improvement District (BID) that maintains, improves, and promotes the Sunnyside commercial district.
As a freelancer, I designed the visual branding of annual reports and marketing materials for initiatives to inform constituents and encourage patronage at local businesses.
Role:
Branding, Print Design
There wasn’t much design work prior to my involvement, so I started from scratch. It made the most sense to use their logo as a springboard for ideas but it wasn’t designed to be very versatile, so I was limited with what I could do with the logo or pull from it. This wasn’t so much a problem for the annual reports, which didn’t need to be as visually engaging, but needed to be solved for marketing initiatives.
The wafting stripes were the most distinctive and visually engaging aspect of the logo, so I utilized them as both a framing device and vehicle for playful colors. I also expanded the color palette and combinations for different types of layouts. These design efforts helped give Sunnyside Shines more ownership over their own visual branding, and made their work more recognizable and enjoyable to their constituents.
